Visit to a Temple

During a recent trip to Hawaii we took a day trip to the Byodo-In Temple in the Valley of the Temples. The Byodo-In Temple is located at the foot of the Ko'olau Mountains on Oahu. The most sacred aspect of the temple is the nine-foot Buddha. The is the largest Buddha carved in over 900 years. Surrounding the Buddha are smaller carvings of enlightened beings known as Boddhisattvas. Here are some pictures from our serene trip to the temple and it's grounds.

Harvesting Collards

After a successful winter garden, my daughter and I harvested the last of the collards. It was time to prepare the soil and get ready to plant spring and summer veggies. Collards are so full of vitamins and fiber, a great addition to any meal. I also learned that they are delicious sauteed with a little garlic and olive oil, no need to cook them for hours in a pot of water and no need to add pork. Fresh and clean, that is how they are best!

Start your Veggies in a Sunny Window

As spring quickly approaches it is time to start your summer garden. I found this picture on an adorable blog called The Lark. What a great way to recycle your tea tins! You can plant your starter seeds in these sweet tins and when ready transfer them to a bigger pot or bed in the yard. I also have been storing up toilet paper rolls to use as little pots for my seedlings to grow in. You can find a complete tutorial for starting seeds in toilet paper rolls on the ehow website. I have just begun prepping our raised boxes for our spring garden, I will keep you posted on our progress and share pictures as well. I hope this summer we have a larger harvest and less caterpillars.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

My children are very particular about cookies. They don't like them from a box and toll house are not up to par. My personal recipe for "Surfer Cookies" meets their satisfaction though. "Surfer Cookies" are oatmeal chocolate chip and absolutely to die for. Whenever I try a new recipe they ask, "Why? Where are the surfer cookies?" Recently, my neighbor introduced me to an amazing blog called Whatever. She has a recipe for the Best Chocolate Chip Cookies. Why not, one more try... Well success! The Valentine's Day Cafe

My husband and I were invited to our youngest child's school for a sweet valentine's day celebration. They set up a cafe with tables, candles, menus, the works. We were seated and served a yummy snack by our sweet boy and treated like very special guests.

No-Knead Bread Recipe

After much buzz about the no-knead bread I will share the recipe with you all. My dear friend Jacqueline passed the recipe on to me and I am forever grateful. What a gift! Watching it rise, the smell of it baking, eating it fresh from the oven has really made my family appreciate the art of bread. Not only is it healthy and fresh, it also saves money that I used to spend on artisan bread. Jacqueline not only makes amazing bread, she prepares healthy meals made from local and organic foods. So hear is the recipe passed from Jacqueline to you!

No-knead bread:

Mix together:

3 cups of organic bread flour (or for healthier bread 2 c white/1 c whole wheat bread flour)

1 packet dry yeast

1 ½ tsp kosher salt

Add to dry mixture:

1 ½ cup water

Rest 4 hours in bowl covered with towel in a warm spot

Flour surface place dough on surface and fold in half

Place bowl upside down over dough on surface for another 30 min.

Preheat oven to 450

Place dutch oven in oven to warm up

After 30 min is up place dough in dutch oven, cover

Set Timer for 30 min. Check to see if it is golden brown. Remove when done.

Enjoy!

D.I.Y Composter

My son Baylor recently decided to make a composter for a class project. The project was to do something that would have a positive impact on the earth. After doing some research online he gathered the materials and put it together. The process is shown below....

First he drilled holes into a large garbage can for ventilation (organic matter needs oxygen in order to break down)

Next he decided to paint the composter to give it a personal touch

He placed straw in the bottom of the can to promote drainage

In went the organic matter we had collected from the kitchen

I will keep you updated on our DIY composter, but as of today I think we need another can. It is amazing how little trash we have now once we have recycled and composted!

No-Knead Bread

Here is the follow-up post to yesterdays post on the bread of France:

My second bread making experience turned out just as yummy as the first. I prepared the dough at around noon. Simply mixing bread flour, salt, yeast, and water together in a bowl.

Then I covered the bowl with a cloth towel for 4 hours in a warm spot.

After letting the dough rise for 4 hours I placed the dough on a floured surface and folded it in half once.

I then covered the dough with a bowl and let it rise for another 30 min.

After 30 minutes I place the dough in a heavy enameled pot and baked it for 30 minutes covered. After 30 minutes I removed the top for 2 minutes to get a nice golden crust.

The family loved the bread and ate it along with yummy soup for dinner. The perfect meal for a winter evening. Most of the bread (and butter) gone!

The Bread of France

This past fall I was fortunate to visit the beautiful country of France. I have been lucky in my life to have travelled a great deal but I had never been to France. I was blown away by the beauty of the country, the art, the wine, and especially the bread! After spending 10 glorious days in France and eating more baguettes then I would like to admit, I became a bit spoiled. Unlike in America, people are not afraid to eat bread. It is a part of their culture. In Paris, everyone on the metro has a beautiful golden baguette sticking out of their purse or half eaten in their hand. I returned from France in search of the perfect loaf of bread. After failing many times I decided to make my own. I made 2 loaves of no-knead bread last week and it was delicious! I am making another batch today and will share the results in tomorrows post, but in the meantime here are some pictures of bread in France....

Sofa Slip-Covers

Having three kids places a definite strain on your furniture. Luckily most of our furnishings are wood and not fabric. But the one of the sofas we own has sure taken a beating! Our neighbors were getting rid of this sofa and offered it to us. It is a "vintage" Crate and Barrel with nice lines and a great pull out bed. We love the couch but after many smoothie spills it could sure use a face lift. Above is a great hemp fabric I found from hemptraders.com . I want something durable. non-toxic, and eco-friendly. I have also thought about going with white. Something I can throw in the wash with some oxy-clean. Any thoughts on what works best in your home?

Slow Cooker - Lentils

I shared this recipe last year but am reposting it in honor of my friend Lisa who just took the Crock Pot plunge. This lentil recipe is easy, healthy, and inexpensive. It takes me about 5 minutes total (including chopping) to prepare. Yummy and quick! Bon Appetite Lisa!

1 bag lentils
1 box chicken or vegetable stock
1 cup water
1 diced onion
1 red pepper chopped
2 chopped and seeded jalapenos
palm full or approx. 2 tbls. paprika
" " " cumin
" " " chili powder
minced garlic to taste (heaping tablespoon for us)
dash of cayenne

put in crockpot on low for 6 or high for 4

serve as burrito or taco filling or nacho topper with guacamole, salsa, and sour cream

freezes beautifully

Do you have a shelf full of cookbooks that looked great in the bookstore but have collected dust ever since? If so then here is the cookbook for you! Make Me Something Good to Eat a cookbook by Tamara Davis has answered my prayers. This small cookbook is full of kid friendly recipes suited for adults as well. The recipes are healthy and quick promoting simple living at its best. I ordered the cookbook after getting hooked on Tamara's online cooking show and have since plowed my way through the book making everything from orange and green muffins to pasta with pesto sauce. OK so here is the challenge, clear out the clutter! Donate any cookbooks that have not been used recently and only keep what you love and use. If there is a cookbook with one or two recipes you like tear them out and place them in your recipe binder. Out with the old in with the new.....

Batman's After-School Snack

Chocolate Chip Banana Bread/Muffins

Ingredients

3 or 4 ripe bananas, mashed up

1/3 cup melted butter

3/4 cup sugar

1 organic egg

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 teaspoon baking soda

Pinch of salt

1 1/2 cups of spelt flour

Chocolate chips (a many as you like)

Directions

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Melt butter in bowl. Add bananas and mash them up with fork. Stir together. Mix in the sugar, egg, and vanilla. Sprinkle the baking soda and salt over top of mixture & stir together. Add the flour & mix. Pour mixture into a buttered 4x8 inch loaf pan or muffin pan. Bake for about 1 hour, muffins about 15-20 min. Remove from pan, slice, and enjoy.

The Library - Save on Cash, Clutter, and Waste

A while back I wrote about my love of books. I also discussed my self-imposed restriction on my purchase of books. So far it has been a success. I have continued to utilize the local trade-a-book to get new books while I trade in the old. I have also expanding my library use 10 fold (you know you are a frequent visitor when you don't need to show your library card). With a bit of delayed gratification the library is not only free but efficient as well. Here is how it works. I go online reserve the books and movies that interest me and when they are in I receive an email notification. Usually it only takes a few days to get what you are looking for unless it is a new release & you are way down on the list. The NY Times Book Review online is a great resource for new books that you might want to reserve. Now I am able to read as much as I want without the expense, the waste, and my shelves are relatively clutter free.

The Land of Little Cars…..

It has been 8 years since my last trip to Germany. We traveled there for my husband’s cousin’s wedding. My husband is part German decent and lived there as a child and later as an adult. With two children under age 3 in tow we traveled around for a week or two exploring villages and the countryside. As many of you know a lot goes unnoticed when you have babies. The focus is when they were last fed and if a nap is going to happen that day. We recently had the opportunity for a return visit. This time with three children ages 10, 8, and 4, a bit more self-sufficient and flexible. I arrived with eyes wide open, noticing all the differences in the way most Americans live compared to Europeans. The most profound being how progressive they are and yet how simply they live. From the Wind Mills and Solar Panels lining the Autoban, to small cars and community composting. This progressive and accountable nature is surrounded by a sense of simplicity that permeates their way of life. Clothes lines, kitchen gardens, walking and biking as a primary mode of transportation, small homes, and afternoon naps. Here are some pictures of our adventure...

My Mother-in-Law just mailed this to me, a mat made out of bags she collected from the local market. What a great way to reuse plastic bags! I was so excited at her vision to weave something so functional and eco-friendly. She wrote me that she has already made 11 of these for friends and family. I put ours next to the tub where it keeps water off the floor and dries quickly. Frances, Thanks for the inspiration!

By keeping like items together it cuts down on clutter and created a less chaotic environment. You also will save time because everything has a home. Resurrecting the Bread Maker

In an effort to practice what I preach I decided that if I did not use my bread maker on a regular basis it would have to go. So I have documented my bread making experience below. I picked up the mix at Whole Foods, it was cheap, healthy, and easy.... No preservatives or high fructose corn syrup, just lots of whole grain goodness... and my house smelt like a bakery.

What appliances do you need to resurrect? Take inventory of what you really use and what collects dust or just takes up space, & decide if you should keep it or pass it on. My vow to you all is if the bread is all gone and the bread maker sits idly by while I pick up a loaf at the market I will pass it on.

Thrifty Thursdays - Black Bean Burgers

Trying to save a few pennies? Here is a great recipe for Black Bean Burgers from this months Gourmet Magazine. I tried the recipe and they were great. One tip, I think I made mine a bit big, so maybe slider size would be better. I served mine on salad with tomatoes, avocado, salsa, and a touch of sour cream. Here it is:

Serves 4

2 (14-oz) cans black beans, rinsed and drained, divided

3 tablespoons mayonnaise

1/3 cup plain dry bread crumbs

2 teaspoons ground cumin

1 teaspoon dried oregano, crumbled

1/4 teaspoon cayenne

1/4 cup finely chopped cilantro

3 tablespoons vegetable oil

4 soft hamburger buns

Accompaniments:  sour cream; salsa; lettuce

Pulse 1 can beans in a food processor with mayonnaise, bread crumbs, cumin, oregano, and cayenne until a coarse purée forms. Transfer to a bowl and stir in cilantro and remaining can beans. Form mixture into 4 patties.

Heat oil in a 12-inch heavy skillet over medium-high heat until it shimmers. Cook burgers until outsides are crisp and lightly browned, turning once, about 5 minutes total. Serve on buns.

The Blue Jars

At a recent visit to the Hawk & Ivy Bed and Breakfast in North Carolina I discovered the "blue jars". These antique mason jars lined the open shelving in the kitchen of the inn. Fully functional with nuts, seeds, coffee, and grains they were the highlight of the kitchen. While staying in the Asheville area I peaked around a few antique markets and scored, a slew of "blue jars". While they were not cheap they were definitely worth it. I use them daily for oats, tea, & coffee. Although I have not researched the value of the my jars it is my understanding that they vary in worth. According to a commenter on the Martha Stewart Wedding site, “Antique mason jars are eagerly sought after by collectors, and are bought and sold not only through antique stores, but also on auction sites such as eBay. While most jars sell for only a few dollars, some have sold for as high as $30,000. The value of a jar is related to its age, rarity, and condition.”

Now that I have defrosted from my trip to D.C I thought I would share one of my favorite discoveries. A friend recommended this great little tea shop in Dupont Circle called, Teaism. While walking around in the bitter cold I stumbled upon it and stopped in for a chai latte. The restaurant/shop smelled of basmati rice and spices. My brother and I sat out front amongst the birds, drank tea, and talked. I stayed in D.C for a few more days and each day made the mile walk across the bridge to have a chai. The last day after spending about an hour at Kramerbooks I stopped by to purchase some loose tea for the road. If you happen to be in the D.C area it is definitely worth a visit.

Repurposing Treasured Items

This past summer I spent about two weeks at my parent's house and during my stay we did a bit (or shall I say, a lot) of de-cluttering. We found lots of lost treasures from Hulk Hogan action figures to beautiful silver tucked away in boxes. We even stumbled across a silver antique toast holder, I was in awe. When I mentioned that it would make a great letter holder my mom 's eyes lit up. At that moment I thought, I will never see that item come my way. Well I did! My mom delivered it to me as a gift, and it is one of my favorite treasures. I have it on my desk to hold letters and bills and enjoy it's beauty everyday. Thanks Mom!

Bedside Storage

Having a limited amount of space is a constant challenge when two children share a room. Keeping furniture to a minimum so they have room to play on the floor is important, as well as making sure they have a place for their favorite items. I decided to use some kitchen storage items from IKEA for my boy's books. Since they have a bunk bed it is important that the child on the top-bunk can store books and a glass of water. D.I.Y Toy Storage

It is always a good idea to do a pre-holiday toy purge. New toys will come in, so it is a great opportunity to share gently used toys with a local charity. After purging and donating to the local orphanage I decided we needed to fine tune our organization system as well. Our three year olds toy collection consists of a few firemen, loads of pirates, and pirate paraphernalia. Since our two boys share a room I decided to place some storage boxes under the bed so they would be easy to get to. I found these boxes at a local shop that used them for display. They were a steal so I bought a bunch. A quick trip to the art supply shop for wooden signs and chalkboard paint. After painting the signs I used 3m double sided tape to attach the signs to the boxes. Using chalkboard paint allows you to repurpose the boxes as your children grow. Check out the pictures above!

Give Granola!

Every year I make granola to give to friends and neighbors. I figure that everyone will eat enough junk over the next few weeks and something remotely healthy might be nice. The process is quite time consuming but it nice to be "stuck" at home during the holidays with time to read a book , or watch Christmas specials on TV. Above is the finished product! I always use a mason jar to store it in so it can be reused and will stay fresh.

A Truly British Tea Party with a Purpose

Today I had a joy of attending a tea at my neighbor Denise's home. She hosted a lovely tea party to benefit Low Country Orphan Relief. A tea party with a purpose. Guests were asked to bring any used clothes, books, school supplies, and toiletries for the children. Bags of goodies were piled up around the Christmas Tree ready to be delivered to the children. The Non-Profit provides aid to children in the Charleston area that are abandoned, abused, and or neglected. The organization basically takes over where the government leaves off. We enjoyed amazing homemade scones, tea, and other traditional British treats. Check out the pictures above....

My Trip to Lime Blue

With a mission to promote all things local I made a trip to Lime Blue yesterday to do a bit of holiday shopping. Lime Blue, located on Queen Street downtown, makes one feel like they have taken "happy pills". From clay birds, personality included, to owl piggy banks everything is full of life & color. Recycled Art For Your Garden

The Bloom' in Art Show last month was fortunate to show the works of Doug James, a local craftsmen, who make the most amazing bottle trees and chairs out of reclaimed materials. The Bottle Tree was placed right outside the studio on King Street, lit up, showing the colors of the bottles beautifully. New Uses for Kid's Art Work

Above are some pictures of notecards I made from my son's art work. I used a paper cutter and made small cards and then tied them together with twine. Don't you think these would make a great gift for the grandparents. Not only are they beautiful but they are free as well! Another great use of finger paintings is wrapping paper. Why spend money on a roll of wrapping paper when it is hanging on your fridge.

Thrifty Thursdays - Lentil Soup

During these tough economic times I though I would reserve Thursday's blog topic for green, healthy ways to save some cash. Here is a great recipe for a yummy soup I just made for the kids. Not only is it healthy & hearty, but it is an inexpensive meal. I bought all the ingredients at Whole Foods, but made sure I got the generic 365 brand to save money.

Lentil Soup:

1 tsp olive oil
1 onion, diced
1 carrot sliced in discs

Saute the above till the onions are clear then add the below ingredients and let simmer 45 minutes or till lentils are soft

4 cups vegetable broth or chicken broth
1 cup dry lentils
1/4 tsp pepper
dash of thyme
2 bay leaves
dash salt
can of diced tomatoes

Croutons:

Take a small loaf of fresh bread, slice thinly, toss in a bit of olive oil and sea salt, bake till crispy.

Serve soup with croutons and parmesan cheese on top.... Enjoy!

Aluette’s Cafe - Organic local food

This past week I had the joy of going to lunch with a dear friend of mine. Living downtown she always knows the best places to eat. Most of the time they are tucked away and off the beaten path. So on Thursday we heading down Reid Street to Aluette's Cafe. A tiny peach building is the home of an absolute gem. Think local, organic, healthy, yummy food with a touch of soul. The cafe was packed at noon, so I suggest getting there early for lunch. They do have an outdoor patio so now that fall has arrived it would be an ideal spot to dine.

P.S I was especially inspired by the voter registration forms placed right by the door, just in case you need one....

As you know I love new and innovative ways to store things. Recently I came across these great DIY storage cans on Design Sponge. I thought I would give them a try with some beautiful paper from Lesesne on King Street. The shop located on upper King has a beautiful selection on modern paper that will work perfectly. Updates on Lap Top Lunches and Meal Exchange

Here is the low down on the Lap Top Lunch Box and my neighborhood meal exchange. First of all I love the Lap Top Lunch. Zero waste and because the compartments are on the small size the kids eat everything I pack. Having 5 compartments also promotes variety. I can pack a fruit, veggie, snack, and sandwich. Best of all the kids love them. One more plus is that they are flat and keep their backpacks flat minimizing the bulk.

Now onto the meal exchange. Three weeks of meal exchanging has proved successful and fun. We have all tried new foods and the kids have learned they like the unexpected. The exchange has saved time, money, and energy. Cooking once instead of three times has freed up time to spend with family and decreased my stress. Yummy EVO Pizza

Before heading to the Hootie and the Blowfish concert a few weeks ago we checked out Evo Pizza up in quaint Park Circle. Yummy! We started with a plate of olives and local summer squash with feta cheese. After enjoying the salad and olives we moved on to the pizzas. Not only was the crust the perfect thickness but the cheese was so fresh! Great friends, local beer, and pizza what could be better? Alright, the concert was icing on the cake, or should I say topping on the pie.

My Neighborhood "Meal Exchange"

In the triangle of homes in my alley way lives three families totaling 6 adults and 8 kids. We have decided to experiment with taking turns cooking dinner three nights a week. On each night one family will prepare enough food for all three families, thereby cooking once instead of three times. Not only will this save on trips to the store and time, you will save on energy as well. We met for tea and picked a menu for a month of meals. Basic guidelines were also set: meal must be ready by 5 pm, healthy and organic, and dietary restrictions to respect. I will keep you posted on how it goes, so far so good, my meal was delivered across the fence promptly by 5:00.

Here is a great tip for pairing down your wardrobe to what you really wear. Turn all of your hangers in the opposite direction (hook in) and after you wear an item put it back the right way (hook out). At the end of six months all of the items still facing the opposite way need to go! Simple and very honest! You can do the same with shoes turn them all toe out on the rack and as you wear them return them heel out. This is a great way to see what you really wear and what needs to head to Goodwill or the local consignment store.

Alright, so I am as guilty as the next with my love of buying new books to read. I love the whole experience of going to the bookstore, browsing to find a great read, drinking a yummy latte, and twenty bucks later leaving with a paperback I will finish in a matter of days! What have I been thinking? With awareness comes change. So I have vowed to alter my book addiction and here is how it will go. Only purchase reference books that I will use over and over again, everything else will come from the library or local Trade-a-Book. Not only can you save tons of cash and some trees, but you can use less gas with the book mobile that practically comes to your house! It is very simple. Go online and reserve your books and the book mobile will bring them along. With a little patience you can read whatever you like. The Trade-a-Book is another great option. De-clutter and few shelves of paperbacks bring them in for trade. After a weekend in the mountains and a much needed "technology fast" I think a "retail fast" is a good follow-up. So how do we avoid those impulse purchases that we really don't need? Check out these great mirrors we purchased at Palmetto Moon in Mount Pleasant. They are made of old Charleston Doors. Before the builder put mirrors in our bathrooms I asked him to wait. Instead of a generic mirror from Lowe's we have 4 of these great works of art in our home. All of the mirrors are original and unique. Another stylish way to recycled and reuse.

Over the next week I thought I would share with you some of the things in my home that are repurposed or made from recycled materials. One of my favorite items is the rug on my front porch made from recycled soda bottles. Not only is it able to be hosed off but it does not fade. After three years in the blazing sun it has retained it's color. I purchased mine locally as well at the Antique Market on Coleman Blvd. I also believe they sell them at Dwell Smart and Global Awakenings. The rugs come in many colors and can be used inside or out. So we decided to go with the open shelves. This is a picture of the beautiful shelf Chris Cobb, of Cobb Woodworking, built for my kitchen. The open shelf definitely makes my kitchen feel more spacious and less confined. The change in paint color from a maple cabinet to this nice gray also adds to the openness. They used a low-voc paint which means no smell and less impact on the environment. I decided to place dishes and cups that I use often on the shelf to minimize dust. Mission Accomplished!

With most of my husband's family living in Hawaii, I have a great appreciation for the ever-comfortable flip-flop. We usually have about 10 pairs in the shoe box on my porch at all times. Lately I have been touring some new homes with a friend of mine. All of the homes have theses huge mud rooms with cubbies and tons of storage. I thought I would share with you my solution to storing children's excess STUFF if you are space challenged. I bought these lockers from a yoga studio I taught at when they closed and it was the best $100 I have spent. Each family member has their own locker with one to spare. Book bags, shoes, and coats all fit nicely with out all the clutter lying around the house. The children love the excitement of having their own "big kid" locker. Another great feature is that they are magnetic, the perfect place to display art work and awards. If you don't have a huge mud room these fit nicely against any wall without taking up a lot of space. Be an "earth helper" and find some used ones as I did!

Another Use for Used Coffee Grinds

Most of you already know that coffee grinds are a great way to boost the quality of your compost but how about using them as an exfoliant? Well, one of my favorite eco-experts, Danny Seo, thinks they do a great job as a body scrub. So after drinking a cup of caffeinated coffee I though I would give it a go. I decided to mix some Dr. Bronner's with the grinds to make a nice paste. I have to say I feel like I just stepped out of the spa, buffed and smooth as a baby's bottom! I have also heard that the caffeine component is great for cellulite, who knows? After stepping out of the shower try using some coconut oil to moisturize, another great all natural idea. Side note: save your shower cleaning till after you do the scrub.

Antique Market Find

One of my favorite mindless pastimes is to browse the local antique market. Most of the time I just look and enjoy the peace that goes along with the stress free window shopping. But on Monday I found a little something I could not resist. This old window frame with chicken wire was the perfect place to display art work and pictures on our kitchen wall. As you all know I am a huge fan of Mrs. Meyer's and after last years honeysuckle spring cleaning line I was wondering how she could beat it. I love the smell of fresh rhubarb and have loved admiring it's beauty at the local farmer's market as well. My mom used to make strawberry-rhubarb jam every spring and we would eat it all winter. When the last jar was gone we all looked forward to hitting the strawberry patch in the spring. It would be nice if we all carried every recyclable item straight out to the blue bins the the garage, but not likely. Laziness often takes over and it ends up in the trash and therefore a landfill. Easy solution, an in-house recycling center. One for paper and one for plastic and glass. This is a great way to minimize your trash and maximize your recycling. I used to have a wire basket on my counter that we would fill up and take out at the end of the day, definitely not a clutter free option. Recently during a trip to Ikea I picked up these great bins that stack. I bought two and printed off signs to designate paper and plastic. When the bins get full the kids take them out to the garage and empty them into the blue bins. If space is an issue keeping two cans under the sink is an option as well.

Here is a great way to organize appliance manuals so you have them nice and handy in the kitchen. Purchase a file box big enough to hold all your manuals. Pull out your trusty label maker and start filing. Here are some sample categories: small kitchen appliances, small electronic devices, washer/dryer, ovens, home fixtures, just to name a few. Patio Gardens

Do you need a huge yard to have your own garden? No! I started small and am already excited but the results. I have included some pictures from my patio garden. From lettuce to tomatoes all my organic veggies are looking great don't you think? I have a wide variety of herbs as well. Parsley, rosemary, basil, sage, and mint looking delicious ready to eat. I purchased the small starter plants from the local farmer's market and used compost from my compost pile as well as organic soil the fill the pots. Any suggestions for other veggies that

Create an "Idea Book"

Lately I have been working with clients who can't seem to part with magazines because of one article, picture, or recipe. I help them to create an "idea book" that way they can save all these ideas in a binder and recycle the rest, minimizing clutter and maintaining order. Here is how I do it. Take a binder ( I love the Green Room Eco brand from Target) use plastic sleeves to hold your pages and dividers to separate categories. Some of the categories in my book are: green living, home ideas, crafts, good things, kids. Every time I add something new I usually can purge something else. Say good-bye to the magazines from three years past, an "idea book" is the clutter free way to go.

What is a locavore? A locavore is an individual who primarily eats food grown locally and within a certain distance from their home. This is a movement sweeping our country for many reasons. One being to support our community farmers. Another reason is food grown locally travels less of a distance to arrive on your plate. Why does this matter? Several reasons: less travel means fresher food, less preservatives to maintain the freshness, less gas to fuel the trucks/boats/planes to get the food to the market, & overall this is healthier for you and the environment. The first step to becoming a locavore is checking out your local farmer's market. The Charleston Farmer's Market is a great place to meet your local farmer's and try all their yummy treats. Open Shelves in the Kitchen?

So I have been toying with the idea of removing some of my kitchen cabinets and replacing them with open shelving. I have two concepts I like, first is to remove the cabinet doors and paint the inside of the cabinets and the second is to put shelves with brackets up. I also like the idea of doing a combination of the two. So I would love your feedback. Here are a few pictures I like. Method Does It Again!

I love natural cleaners and make a point to try them all so I can recommend the best to my clients. When you are using natural cleaners a good old fashion scrub can be hard to find until now. Method has just introduced a kitchen and bath scrub called, Le Scrub, it smells like mint and eucalyptus and works like Comet. The line also includes a toilet bowl scrub I will try soon as well. Save Water & Cash on your Bill

It is a known fact that 20-35 % of toilets leak about a gallon per hour. How do you determine if yours is one? Here are a few tips to checking for toilet leaks. Find you water meter and write down the reading, then turn off all water fixtures in your home, don't use any water for one hour, then recheck your meter. If the meter reading has changed you may have a leak. Another way is to drop food coloring into the tank of the toilet. If the colored water makes its way to your toilet bowl after a few minutes then you have a lose flapper. This alone can add thousands of gallons of water to your usage each billing cycle. Save water and $ and make sure you are leak free!

Community Composting at Hampton Park

Are you interested in composting but do not have the space or funds for a composter? Recently I found out that the Hampton Park Horticulture Center has community compost bins. You can save up your food scraps in a nice compostable bag and then drop them off at the bins. A few months later they will give you some "black gold" for your contribution. You can use this nutritious soil in your garden and plants at home. I have been researching composters because the one I had fell apart, so off the the recycling center it went. Luckily I was able to retrieve the "black gold" first. So until I find a new composter that will last forever and it easy to use I will bring my food waste to the community composter & wait for it to turn to "gold".

A Ban on Bisphenol A?

I know we have covered the dangers of Bisphenol A before. But here is some new information. As mentioned before this chemical leaches out of your polycarbonate plastic into your food and beverages when the plastic is heated. BPA has been linked to many disorders such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, changes in brain structures, and early puberty. Now they are noting that this chemical is also present in tin cans. The lining of the cans contains BPA. This is especially a problem with old cans; another reason to clean out that pantry! In Canada they are working towards banning this dangerous chemical because the research is so alarming. Avoid the concern and store leftovers in mason jars and glass containers. I tossed the plastic years ago in exchange for a set by Martha Stewart, it is still in excellent condition and has lots of sizes and shapes to store my leftovers and goodies.

Organizing Your Linen Closet

Can't find the pillow cases that match the sheets? Unsure if it is a king, queen, or twin? Top sheet, bottom sheet? Here is a great tip for organizing your linen closet: place your sheet set into one of the set's pillow cases and store that way. This way your set stays together and is always within reach. Then organize your shelves according to the size of the sheets. Top shelf = kings, middle = queens, bottom shelf = twin sets. If you only have one shelf stack the sets and label the shelf to keep track. So simple and to keep it even neater fold the sheets, place inside the pillow case, then fold the pillow case like a present. Nice and tidy as well as functional!

Taco Boy, Well Worth The Trip!

I know that driving from Mount Pleasant all the way to Taco Boy on Folly Beach is not the "greenest" way to get a taco, but it is worth the trip. About once a month my family of five pile into our Volvo wagon and head to the beach for tacos, chips and pico and we enjoy every bite! Recently I learned that Taco Boy will be opening a downtown location and I am thrilled beyond words. I also learned that unbenonced to me Taco Boy is a "green" restaurant, from using recycled materials in their building process to growing their own chili peppers. The menu offers great vegetarian dishes as well. With an atmosphere great for kids and adults alike it is hard to pass up, so next time you are craving some queso and chips head to the beach and stop by Taco Boy!

Clorox Goes Green?

As many of you already know Clorox has recently acquired Burt's Bees and now they are even going a bit "green". The product line is called Green Works and includes a variety of household cleaning products. The ingredients are said to be at least 99% natural, and with a little research and the help of Tree Hugger I found the are mostly "natural" and a big step up from other conventional products. As a "natural cleaning product expert", I decided to give them a shot. So I purchased the all-purpose spray and the bathroom cleaner. As far as scent goes, they are citrusy and not too over-powering and they actually did a decent job. I will most likely stick with my own concoction of baking soda and Dr. Bronner's or Mrs. Meyer's(can't get enough of the lavender), but for those that have been devoted to Clorox for the past 20 years this might be an easy and green switch!

Check out the "Discover Green Building Exhibit" on January 25-27th at the Charleston Home and Design Show. The show will be located at the Gaillard Auditorium in Charleston (admission $7.00 per person). There will be over a dozen green building companies there to answer you questions and provide information to the public on the benefits of green building. Seminars will also be held throughout the day to provide a more in depth understanding of what goes into creating a healthy, earth-friendly home. Some of the key topics are: green construction, eco-friendly remodeling, alternative energy, water and energy conservation, and creating a non-toxic home. The "Discover Green Building Exhibit" is free with admission to the show.

Yeah! That ever so complex question, “Paper or Plastic?” will soon disappear at Whole Foods. Whole Foods will no longer carry plastic bags as of Earth Day 2008. To celebrate this event they are offering these great shopping bags for only 99 cents. The bags are made of 80% post-consumer waste, another plus. Another positive point is that you get a 5 cent refund for every reusable bag you use while you shop. Plastic bags will not only sit in our landfills for thousands of years before they break down, but they are harmful to wildlife when disposed of in-properly. So say good-bye to those plastic bags and join the movement! Any old bag will do!
